Eleven Inexpensive Date Ideas

Eleven Inexpensive Date Ideas

I get it. After having kids, making quality alone time with your significant other is TOUGH! Life gets crazy and our time is filled with obligations, such as going to work, cooking dinner, potty training, driving to soccer practice, and wiping boogers.

Though it’s so important to make one on one time a priority, because a solid relationship builds a foundation for a balanced home.

I understand that taking the time, and the expense that can come along with going out, can add up. So here are some ideas for easy and inexpensive date nights for you and your significant other, that can help you take time to reconnect, without breaking the bank.

1. Go On A Hike

Some of my favorite memories with my husband are going on hikes together. Actually one of our favorite go to anniversary celebrations involve staying at a log cabin at a nearby state park and then hitting the trails. It’s refreshing! Getting out in nature and breathing fresh air has a sense of tranquility that is unmatched. You also don’t have any distractions, which forces you to concentrate on each other to reconnect. Plus taking a hike doesn’t cost anything! So win win- quality alone time without spending a dime!

2. Homemade Pizza & Game Night

If being out in the naturescape isn’t your forte maybe staying in and making homemade pizza and having a game night is more your speed! Great thing about this one is, you don’t even have to get a sitter (score!). You can put the kids to bed and get to cooking. It’s fun to see what fun pizza concoctions you can come up with and what’s better than an excuse to eat pizza! After chowing down, you can break out the board games and have a ball. I’m personally into the classics but you do your thing mama. The options are endless and you can let your competitive side come out. Either way, prepare for a belly full of pizza and hearty laughs.

3. Have a Bonfire and Bottle of Wine

Another one of my favorite times with my hubby is our fall bonfires. After putting the kids to bed (yes another babysitter free option) we like to go out back and light it up (the bonfire I mean!) and pop open a nice bottle (or two) or wine. Snuggle up in some warm cozy blankets, let the wine kick in and get to cuddling. Watching the flames and looking at the stars is so relaxing and gives you alone time, to chat about your future dreams.

4. Grab Dessert at a Fancy Restaurant

Ok, so this one can cost A LITTLE but saves a ton of time and moolah by choosing to forego the main course and just skip right to the goods. Choose your favorite creme brûlée or volcano chocolate cake (or whatever tickles your fancy) and dig in. Make sure to actually share though! And what is better than sitting next to candlelight sharing sweets with your sweetie!

5. Go For a Drive

Another option that only costs a couple bucks for a tank of gas, is hopping in the car and just driving. Especially on a nice summer day with clear skies and the sun shining. Whether you prefer to blast your tunes and sing along or keep it quiet so you can relax and converse, you can’t go wrong. I would recommend steering clear of anywhere with lots of traffic (because let’s face it- that just adds stress) and go towards the open roads. Take in the scenes and enjoy your company.

6. Take a Bike Ride

Another option for getting out in the fresh air on the cheap is a good old fashioned bike ride. I love this one. It’s so fun to explore together and see what beautiful scenery you can find. It’s a great way to connect and also great exercise which leads me to my next idea!

7. Have a Picnic

After peddling away with you sweetie why not reward yourself with some good eats! What’s more old fashioned romantic than a simple picnic. You can even do this one in your very own backyard if you prefer! So fill up that basket with your favorite delicious snacks and desserts and enjoy! Don’t forget the wine and blanket!

8. Wine Tasting

While this one isn’t completely free, it is a very inexpensive option if you are wanting to get out of the house. Depending on your location, a lot of places offer wine tastings for under $10 and you have the option of picking the type of wines you’d like to sample. The places I’ve tried generally give 5-7 samples in each tasting and usually give you some vino knowledge in the process. If you have never done this, and you enjoy wine, you should give it a try! It’s a super relaxed vibe and fun to learn something new together. Once you find your favorite new beverage, make sure to bring a bottle home to enjoy at your next date night!

9. Netflix and Chill

This one might be the easiest of all. Turn on your favorite show or movie and binge watch. Make sure it’s something you both enjoy and get excited over. Sorry ladies, you’ll most likely have to save those Hallmark movies for another time. Throw some popcorn on and become enthralled in your tv world. Whether it’s scandals of the rich and famous or monsters from the upside down world, it’s sure to give you and your partner pure entertainment and plenty to talk about after you’ve finished watching.

10. Cook a Romantic Dinner at Home

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Now, although I’m sure that’s not the case for every man, I’ve got a funny hunch it is pretty accurate for most. There’s a couple different ways to go about this. You can put your cooking skills to the test by surprising your partner with his favorite meal, or you can go ahead and gather all the ingredients and cook it together.

While you’re waiting for the food to cook, be sure to place a couple candles out, and you know that wedding china that almost NEVER gets used? Yup, now would be a good time to break that out. And that new bottle of wine you purchased? Now would be a great time to break THAT out. And wah-lah! You’ve got yourself a mouthwatering romantic candle lit date night that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
